Anatomy of a Cabinet

Cabinet surfaces are defined as either being Exposed, Semi-Exposed, or Concealed. Different materials can often be used for all three types of components.

Exposed Surfaces

These are surfaces that are seen when cabinet drawers and doors are closed from the exterior. The exception is the inside face of doors, which are considered exposed.

SemiExposed

These are surfaces that are seen when cabinet doors and drawers are opened. They are often clear maple or birch plywood or a type of easily maintained melamine.

Concealed

These are surfaces that are never seen. Sides of cabinets, if placed at the end of a row, will be seen and are considered exposed surfaces.
